What is engagement?

Lack of motivation and flexibility in the workplace can cause employees to be disengaged and unmotivated. If you notice your employees are irritable or uninterested on a consistent basis, it’s likely they’re feeling “stuck” in their jobs. Engaged employees are self-motivated to complete duties efficiently and problem solve without constant direction. They give positive feedback and constructive criticism when needed.
Improving Employee Engagement
Understand that there is no one solution for employee boredom. Analyze your company’s culture and structure. Can you identify a key issue that may be dragging down your employees? Are they frustrated with one thing in particular, or is does your current system simply facilitate disengagement and/or negativity? Listen to employees and their concerns. Establish concrete goals and make sure employees know exactly what is expected of them.
Alcohol: A Solution to Engagement?
It’s not uncommon for employers to offer employees alcohol at work. While some may find this as a temporary solution to keep employees happy, understand that some of your workers may be struggling with addiction. Providing constant temptation can lead to more serious consequences down the road. Allowing employees to drink at work also poses a number of liability issues if something goes wrong. While alcohol may encourage your employees for one afternoon, it is not a long-term solution for disengagement and boredom.
