Workplace wellness involves a lot of different things. Health Risk Assessments (HRAs) can identify areas of concern in an employee’s physical health. Employee health screenings offered on-site can give employees a “baseline” understanding of how healthy they really are, and educational classes can also boost health awareness around the office. And let’s not forget one last big piece of the wellness equation:  a healthier work environment. And yes, that even includes the vending machines.

The vending machine in the office can be just like Darth Vader – the dark side. It’s all too easy for employees to rush out the door, skip breakfast, and grab a snack cake from the vending machine on their way to their desk. Or, the 2-3pm slump where employees can barely keep their eyes open is also notorious for poor vending machine choices. Even the healthiest employees can slump to deep lows and make poor choices if they are stressed, tired or hungry. Healthy Vending Machine Choices

You may not own your vending machines, and instead rent them from another company. And while the arrangement can look different from office to office, one thing is important:  keep an eye on the vending choices and speak up! There are dozens of companies that now offer “healthy” vending machines. While you may not have complete control over what’s vended in the machines, you should at least have some way of controlling the options provided if you’re managing the place. And while fresh foods may not last long or be practical for your office, consider options that are a “healthier choice” among the standard cookies, candy and gum.

A Better Choice at the Vending Machine

Vending machines are everywhere. If you add up the calories consumed by those struggling to get a quick snack you might be surprised and shocked. Fortunately, more and more snacks, drinks and meals are on the market that make it easier to choose something healthy, even on the go. Consider replacing some of your vending machine’s chips, cookies and snacks with some of these items instead:

  • pretzels
  • Energy or protein bars
  • packets of dried fruit
  • baked chips or veggie chips
  • trail mix
  • granola bars
  • seeds & nuts
  • organic crackers
  • dark chocolate
  • sugar-free gum
  • 100% real fruit juice
  • vitamin water

It might take a little time for your employees to get used to, but it’s worth it in the end! Changing to healthy snacks that can boost energy, add protein and provide nutrition won’t only improve an employee’s physical health – but it might give them more energy and help them feel better, too!
