Start the night before

Yes, your morning starts when you wake up. But, the choices you make before your head hits the pillow will change the way your morning goes. Start by forming an evening routine. Plan what you’ll wear and set out your entire outfit. Decide if you’ll bring a lunch or buy one. Pack your lunch after dinner before you’ve done the dishes. Quiet time for yourself can prepare you for bed and help you sleep better. Have a nightly ritual that is just for you, whether you read on the front porch, drink a cup of tea or do a yoga video.

Think about breakfast

We all know that a balanced breakfast prepares us for the day, but what exactly is a “balanced” breakfast?

Carbohydrates are a good source of energy in the form of glucose. Include one healthy carb, such as oatmeal or whole wheat bread, in every breakfast. This keeps you energized longer and reduces the chance of peaks or lows in energy.

Stay away from processed meats that are high in fat and cholesterol. Bacon and sausage are the centers of many breakfasts, but beans are a low-fat protein option that can be incorporated into your morning meal.

Don’t forget the fruit. A fruit smoothie or a bottle of fruit juice will give you the initial energy boost you crave from coffee, but it won’t send you crashing a few hours later.

Coffee Misconceptions

People have been amazed at the power of the coffee bean for years, and with good reason. Coffee can help reduce drowsiness and make you feel alert, but it in no way acts the same way as sleep. Don’t fall into the habit of replacing a few hours of missing sleep with an extra cup of joe. Sleep lets your body heal and nourishes all of your bodily processes. Coffee, however, does not have the same effects and can impair your memory and mental processes.
