Spring has finally settled in. As the weather gets nicer, people are becoming more active — more tennis, biking, jogging, running, and baseball. These activities can bring you great enjoyment and some much needed exercise, but if you don’t prepare for them, you could be putting yourself at risk for serious joint injury.
Things too look out for when exercising
Being active and playing sports can cause joint pain because of the pressure. Look out for joint pain, specifically in the knees, elbows, wrists and ankles. If this pain persists for more than 48 hours, you may need to see a doctor (sports injuries). You may also be on the lookout for swelling, stiffness and restricted range movements.
If you’re working out or playing a sport and experience severe joint pain, don’t power through it. Stop immediately in order to avoid causing yourself any more harm.
Treat joint injuries
In the event you experience joint pain or a sports injury, you can rely on the P.R.I.C.E method:
- Prevention: When you’re injured, get off your feet. Don’t put weight on your injury.
- Rest: Take a break. It will help your injuries heal correctly.
- Ice: Ice your injury or use a cold pack. Ice helps relieve pain and reduce swelling.
- Compression: Compress your injury to reduce swelling. Swelling can delay the healing process.
- Elevate: If you, for example, injure a leg or ankle, prop it up on a few pillows. Keep your injury above the level of your heart. This will help control swelling.
The best way to prevent injuries and joint pain is to make sure you’re stretching and warming up your muscles. This, and maintaining a healthy weight, will lessen your chance of getting hurt.
