Take the Stairs | Five Ways to Promote Health at the Office

Staying fit while working a 9 to 5 job can sometimes be overwhelming. Sitting in a desk all day sipping on coffee, getting energized by a quick meal and working late can really take its tole on a person’s body. That is why we have come up with five ways you can encourage a healthy atmosphere at your office!

Taking two flights of stairs a day can result in a potential six pounds of weight loss every year.

1. Take the Stairs

The first way to encourage wellness in the office is to promote the stairs.

Encourage your employees to take the stairs to get to another floor instead of using the elevator. The best way to do this is by placing signs next to the elevator. Some signs can even include fun facts and statistics like: “You burn 10 calories a minute every time you take the stairs.”

2. Free Pedometers

Create an office challenge by seeing which department can take the most steps in a month. Give out free pedometers and whichever department tracks the most steps wins a desirable prize, such as an extra vacation day, a catered lunch, or a gift card of their choice.

3. More Water, Less Soda

Its hard to make a healthy food or beverage choice when you are tired and need a quick fix, but choosing water over a caffeinated beverage is a better decision in the long run. To encourage people to drink more water place a cooler of bottled water next to the soda machines. Try asking employees to increase their intake of water and decrease their intake of sugary beverages. Also try adding fun facts next to the soda machine like: “To burn off the calories in this soda, you’ll have to work out for one hour.”

4. Fruity Friday

Did you know that you should be eating at least five servings of fruit a day? To promote healthy eating ask the everyone in the office to bring in two types of fruit on Fridays. They will then keep one piece of fruit for themselves  and then they leave the other in the break-room to share with a co-worker. Not only will your employees hopefully be eating two fruits, they will also get to try other fruits they normally don’t have at home.

5. Wellness Email and Yearly Screen

Every month try to send a wellness email to your office. The wellness email can be as simple as a few helpful health tips or it could give facts and statistic about diet and exercise. If you are the boss, don’t be afraid to share some personal stories too! If your employees know you are making an effort to get healthy they may just decide to jump on the bandwagon.

Also give your employees the option of doing a wellness screening. Wellness screenings can provide tons of information on a person’s current health and can suggest lifestyle changes that need to be made. Offering a free health screening is vital to ensuring your employees are well taken care of by your company.

The more you can encourage your employees to live healthier lifestyles the better. Healthy lifestyles are not only beneficial to your insurance policies but also important to the individual person’s life. The more you invest in your people, the more your company will thrive!
